Check If Paint Is Latex Or Oil Based

Many older homes built before 1979 used lead based paint on the walls and the ceilings. After this time frame, most of these home owners had to use oil-based primers and oil-based paints to paint over the lead based paint.

Now a days, most home centers such as Home Depot and Lowes are only selling water-based and latex-based paints since these newer paints are more environmentally friendly and have advantages over oil-based paints.

Generally, the advantages of most water-based paints are:

-   Easy cleanup with water
-   Less strong odor
-   Quick drying
-   An elastic, flexible finish
-   Stable color over time, without yellowing

Latex or oil-based? -- Ready to do some painting over your old house paint?

Wondering whether you need a latex or oil-based paint? Here's how to tell.

1)    First, scrub a small area with a solution of household detergent and warm water. Rinse well and towel dry.

2)    Then soak a cotton ball, Q-tip or soft rag in alcohol and rub it back and forth over the cleaned area.

3)    If paint comes off, it's latex. Now you need to paint over this using another coat of the same latex type paint.

4)    If the paint doesn't come off, it's oil-based, and you must use an oil-based primer over it.

5)    Then you have options for the finish coat, and different types of latex or oil-based paint can be used.

At this point, after testing and priming, you want to discuss both your options and paint performance characteristics with the paint experts at your local hardware store.
